Jan 16, 2013 | 5:34 AM

Ted Matheson Men's Wear has been dressing up men in downtown Prince Albert for 86 years — a tradition which owner Fred Matheson plans to continue for many years to come.

The men's clothing store opened its doors in 1929, on the cusp of the Great Depression and has remained a constant on 1111 Central Avenue ever since.

“It was tough year to start business, but grandpa persevered,” said Fred Matheson.

“He worked here by himself and the employees until the 50s when my uncle … and my father started in the business and they worked with my grandpa until he passed in the 70s.”

Fred, a third generation Matheson grew up around the store doing odd jobs until he left the city pursue his university education.

He returned to make the store his career in 1986, and took over the family business following the death of his father in 2002.

“I'm dealing with customers that had dealt with my grandpa, my dad, my uncle and myself,” said Fred adding his son Jordon has also worked in the store fitting the same customers his great-grandfather served.

Entering its 84th year on Central Avenue, Fred said the combination of high quality men’s clothing and good customer service has kept the business strong and vibrant.

“We don’t have maybe all the fancy things as far as online shopping and all that, but we’re just a good classic men’s wear store that has been around and will continue to be around.”

“We’ll always be in downtown because it’s been very good to us,” he said.
