Strawberry Shortcake, Doodlebops play double-header

Jan 15, 2013 | 3:09 PM

Strawberry Shortcake and Friends are joining the Doodlebops for a song and dance-filled evening at the Rawlinson Centre.

The production took nine months to prepare, which director Patti Caplette compared to pregnancy. “I sort of always put our show sort of akin to, you know, gestation of nine months. Kind of like giving birth.”

The end result is what she described as a high energy, entertaining part of the show with the Doodlebops, the brother and sister trio that sing and dance in a “rockstar fashion.”

“Kids are going to be up singing and dancing,” Caplette said.

The next part of the show features Strawberry Shortcake and Friends – the pink-clad character will be in the Berry Bitty City. “And she’s going to have a more story –like with songs production, with all of her best friends, her six best friends.” The group will be working towards a “glitzy glazed talent show.”

The two acts are completely separate and won’t cross over into each other’s performances.

The show, geared towards the younger set, is about one hour-and-a-half long. The audience, Caplette said, is welcome to get up to sing and dance to recognizable favourites such as the Doodlebops’

“We’re the Doodlebops” and “Get on the Bus” and Strawberry Shortcake’s “Home Sweet Home” and her friend Cherry Jam’s “Anything is Possible”.

“We think that they really complement each other,” Caplette said of the two acts, which are true to the original character conceptions. “We just think that it’s a great way to pair some fantastic musical entertainment that will appeal to both boys and girls.”
