MMA makes a splash on SaskTel Max

Nov 6, 2012 | 10:29 AM

Prince Albert Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fans will have something interesting to watch this month on SaskTel Max.

Legends Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym in Prince Albert was recently featured in a documentary concerning the popular sport of MMA.

Corey Lillis, an instructor at the gym spoke about how MMA has been growing in popularity recently.

“Mixed Martial Arts has been growing incredibly probably in the last four years,” Lillis said. “Specifically there’s a very, very popular fight series that happens twice a year in Regina called ‘Saturday Night Fights.’”

Lillis said he was first approached by SaskTel to produce the series after an instructor at their affiliate gym in Regina called Complete Mixed Martial Arts and recommended the Prince Albert Gym.

A representative of production company Bambo Shoots came to Prince Albert and spent about two hours talking to the fighters and getting an idea of what it was to become an MMA fighter.

Lillis said that new visitors are always welcome to the gym.

“Anyone’s welcome to stop by Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings to check out the sport and participate,” Lillis said.

The documentary is available on SaskTel Max on Demand all month long.
