Streets run pink in Saskatoon

Streaks of pink lined the streets of Saskatoon today as hundreds walked and ran for breast cancer.

At 10 a.m., this morning men and women donned their favourite pink attire for the 2012 CIBC Walk/Run for the Cure.

Bringing together survivors from the area and their families, Jamie Boschman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2010 participated today to help women who have had their lives changed forever.

“It's like a scar that always sticks with you,” said Boschman. “You think about it, and you never forget the day that you hear that you have breast cancer.”

Walking alongside his wife, Dean Boschman said Jaime is a walking miracle, adding after hearing the news it was a battle of emotions.

“We're all used to fixing things and this is one of those things in life you can't do anything about and you have to learn how to deal with it on an emotional level and we worked through it,” said Boschman.

For 26-year-old Dessa Lang, she hit the streets for her grandmother who has been battling breast cancer and had one breast removed this spring.

“I've always donated or participated in some way, but I never ran,” said Lang. “I just thought this would be a great tribute to my grandmother to come out today and raise money, it's a great cause.”

A mother-daughter combo also prepped for the day's journey. Twenty-five-year-old Alyssa Erb along with close friends joined her mother Lorna Neufeld, who had just received word a few weeks ago that she had breast cancer.

“It wasn't easy to hear, that's for sure,” said Erb of the diagnosis her mother received back in June.

“There's such good treatment out there nowadays I know she's going to be around and we'll fight this all together.”

Neufeld said support from friends and family has kept her spirits high.

“Just having the support from my coworker and people in the (Prince Albert) community, people are really willing to get behind this,” said Neufeld, adding her team raised close to $3,000 in the last 10 days.

In 2011 the CIBC Run for the Cure raised more than $30 million dollars for breast cancer research.
