Roughriders set to add LB Joe Lobendahn

There's yet another new Saskatchewan Roughrider in town.

Well…not officially, though. Linebacker Joe Lobendahn was at practice Monday morning, but he's not officially a Rider yet. That could come Tuesday after he passes a physical.

Lobendahn has bounced around the CFL a little bit the last few years, but is still only 29-years-old. He was last with the Calgary Stampeders during training camp, but didn't win a spot, thanks in part to a deep linebacking core. He previously playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before that, and was originally a Detroit Lion in 2007.

“He's a veteran presence , he's a guy that even when I was in Hamilton I looked at getting Joe,” said head coach Corey Chamblin. “He's fierce , I met with him yesterday and I was scared. That's what I want, I want to be scared of my players.”

The physical is likely needed because Lobendahn does have a history of injuries in his career. Mostly recently injuring his knee, but Chamblin isn't too worried about that saying that he passed a physical at the start of training camp in Calgary.

Lobendahn has mostly played middle linebacker in his career, and the Riders already have a guy there, but it looks like Shomari Williams could be moving to the outside.

“Last week Shomari actually played will instead of mac,” said Chamblin. “Because I think that suits him even better, because he's in a shorter area and is able to use his speed.”

That being said, it was just on Saturday when Chamblin re-affirmed his confidence in the roster, and he likes the players he's got, but that doesn't mean they've stopped looking.

“Right now, at this point, there's always one or two guys you're looking to improve,” said Chamblin. “This is the group that can get it done, but like anything else you always want improvement if improvement is there.”

Before that Chamblin did say that he's not really a fan of bringing in guys who were cut from NFL camps, unless there's some kind of familiarity with them.
