Ring drives for five at this year’s Men’s Lobstick

Prince Albert’s Martin Ring has won four Conexus Men’s Lobstick golf tournaments in his time, the last being just a few years ago in 2010.

But heading into this year’s Lobstick starting on Monday, Ring will have something to prove.
After admitting he was disappointed by a second flight finish in the May Day Masters at Cooke Municipal over the May long weekend, Ring said there’s no better course for him than Waskesiu to have a good game on.

“The May Day Masters wasn’t my best weekend of the year by any stretch, but things seem to be coming around this week,” said Ring. “I’ve been out and playing quite a few extra holes in the evenings and practice, getting my head back into it.”

“I always seem to come up with a good solid game when I come up to Waskesiu, it fits my eye and fits my game.”

Ring knows all the tricks and bumps on the course and loves the fact it’s not overly long and the overall atmosphere.

“It’s one of my favourite places to play,” said Ring, who was one win away for playing for the Lobstick title last year. “It’s got a great feeling to it, the big spruce trees, you’re in the national park, the wildlife, it’s just a neat feeling golf course.

“It doesn’t really favour the long ball hitters and it’s a terrific match play course. Some of that leads to the success I have had up there.”

Although he hasn’t been up there as of Friday evening, Ring plans on visiting the course this weekend weather permitting to get in a practice round in before the tournament.

In order to capture his fifth title, he’ll have to battle against some of the best golfers around the province, including Colin Coben who’s had a great season so far. Coben finished runner up in the May Day before capturing his second straight Senior Men’s Lobstick on Thursday.

All in all, Ring can’t wait to for his drive to make it five.

“It’s always an exciting time of year to go up and play the Lobstick. There’s lots of faces that you only see once a year and good friendships,” said Ring. “I’m looking forward to getting up to the lake and playing a fantastic golf course and hopefully having another good run.”

Deer Valley’s Andrew Zaba won the title last year, beating Dallas Mengel of Saskatoon in the finals.

The Lobstick starts on Monday and will declare one winner Saturday.
