FSIN reveals medals for new graduates

May 29, 2012 | 6:47 AM

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations revealed symbolic medallions they will be giving to new high school graduates, to remind them education is an opportunity.

“The signatories saw that the future generations would not be left out of the treaty-making process. Those elders were thinking about the young people of today and tomorrow,” said Chief Simon Bird.

“The gifting of a medal to the graduates is a reminder of the gift of those elders.”

He said it's a major issue facing First Nations communities that needs to be addressed. Bird hopes the 600 medals will be a good first step.
