Lingerie football league coming to Regina

Feb 22, 2012 | 6:02 PM

A very different type of football team is coming to Regina this summer.

The Lingerie Football League announced that Regina will be the third Canadian franchise team in the league.

The women’s sport is exactly what it sounds like and it has been operating in the U.S. for three years. The uniform is not your standard football gear with players wearing bikini tops, bathing suit bottoms and garters on the field.

League founder Mitchell Mortaza understands the team will face criticism but he encourages football fans to try watching a game.

“When you actually go to a game or watch it you realize that it’s real football – believe it or not -played at a very high level, by great athletes,” he said.

Mortaza said the tradition and fanaticism around the game of football in Saskatchewan put Regina near the top of the list for the next franchise. He added that support from the Brandt Centre – where the team will play also helped.

The other Canadian teams include the B.C. Angels announced last week and the Toronto Triumph. The league is expected to bring in three more franchises and Regina might not have the only team in the province. Mortaza referred to another Saskatchewan market that will serve as a great rival.
