Santa brings pizza for students in Wollaston Lake

Dec 9, 2011 | 8:19 AM

In a twist from the normal Santa showed his ability to cook as he delivered pizza to students at Father Megret Elementary School in Wollaston Lake on Thursday for lunch.

“We loaded up the airplanes with pizza instead of toys and fed 1,500 kids pizza over the past four days,” said Debbie Wrightson, customer relations and sales manager for Transwest Air.

“(It’s) 368 pizzas, that is a lot of cheese.”

It’s part of the airline giving back to the communities where they work, she said.

“These communities are isolated, (people) have no other way of getting out other that flying, unless they have to wait for the winter road and sometimes that’s not an option for them,” Wrightson said.

“So really they have no way out of the community, but to fly so we certainly appreciate their business that this is our way of giving back.”

For the past 12 years Transwest has loaded up a charter plane with toys and on a one-day run visited Fond du Lac, Black Lake, Stony Rapids and Wollaston. This year they thought they would spend a little
more time in the communities and bring something that the kids rarely got to eat.

Kids don’t always get to leave the community with their parents — they don’t necessarily get to go out have a treat like pizza, Wrightson said.

The kids’ eyes lit up as Santa walked into each of the classrooms accompanied by boxes of cheese and pepperoni pizza.

“This is a treat,” said Lillian Daniels, a teacher at the school.

While frozen pizza can sometimes be purchased at the store to be cooked at home, delivery pizza rarely ever happens.

“No never, not to have it special delivery by Santa Claus,” Daniels said.

Santa handed out letters in response to the ones the kids had written and listened to a few request for remote control snowmobiles and Barbies of Christmas. The students used Santa’s visit to show off their performances for the upcoming Christmas concert before digging into their cheesy lunch.
