Jurgens upsets NDP incumbent Furber

Nov 7, 2011 | 11:13 PM

There was an upset in the Prince Albert Northcote riding as incumbent, NDP candidate Darcy Furber lost his seat to upstart, SaskParty candidate, Victoria Jurgens.

Furber, who comfortably captured the riding in 2007 by a margin of 1,200 votes, lost in one of the closest races on election night. It went down to the final polls. In the end, Jurgens won the seat by just less than 200 votes.

“This is so terribly exciting, the NDP have been in power in this seat for 25 years or more, (but) through a lot of hard work and a team that is second to none, we managed to bring it home,” Jurgens said.

When asked about her key to success in this election, Jurgens chalked it up to listening to her constituents.

“We listened to the people and they spoke and they came through and said, “we want a new future for Saskatchewan,” Jurgens said.

As for Darcy Furber, he called the result “terribly disappointing.”

“We ran what we thought was a positive campaign, unfortunately the people of Saskatchewan didn’t agree, so we’ll go back to the table and try to figure out what resonates with the Saskatchewan voters and start over,” Furber said.

“We got swept up in the (SaskParty) landslide, just like everyone else and it’s unfortunate because I know deep down that the policies of new democrats and the policies that we were proposing in our platform are ones that benefit most of the people in Prince Albert Northcote.”

Jurgens said she’s look forward to her first steps as an MLA.

“The first step is we get training on being an MLA and going down to Regina, but the very first step is finishing all the hugs and the thank you to all the people that helped me,” Jurgens said.
