Enhancement project for Pear Lake begins

Oct 24, 2011 | 6:52 AM

There is a great fishing spot north of Prince Albert, stocked with brook and rainbow trout, but it’s not the easiest place to get to.

Pear Lake is difficult to fish because a bog sits on the water’s edge and the road to the lake is full of potholes, but the Northern Waters Flyfishers are stating a project to change that, making it more accessible.

“The only way to get to the water was walking over the bog on pallets and logs and it’s rather tricky,” said Kendall Kerr, president of Northern Waters Flyfishers.

“You had to balance. You would get wet and there was no shoreline in which to get into your boat, so you had one chance to jump in and the drop from the end of the bog was over eight feet deep.”

Kerr and a group of fishers spent part of the weekend removing debris. The plan is to have a backhoe go in during the winter and cut a swath in the bog. Gravel would then be poured into the space to make an access ramp. The enhancement project would also include a grading of the road to the lake’s parking lot.

“We’re enhancing the access so anybody that fishes in the Prince Albert area can access this with small water crafts such as a canoe, a rowboat, a kayak or any other watercraft that they can carry in,” Kerr said.

Kerr said he hopes the project will be ready by next spring.

“We’re working in co-operation with Oceans and Fisheries and Saskatchewan Environment to get this done and the R.M. of Lakeland has helped us out. They’ve created a road access into it.”

The project was able to happen with the help of fundraisers and a grant from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Kerr said.

Pear Lake is about 70 kilometres north of Prince Albert located on Highway 2, just before the Waskesiu turnoff.
