Regina’s only fully accessible park vandalized

Aug 17, 2011 | 6:54 AM

It's the City of Regina's only fully accessible park — meaning it's used by adults and children with mobility issues alike — and it's closed because of vandalism.

On Saturday night a fire was lit on the metal and plastic play structure at the Rick Hansen Optimist Park, forcing its closure and leaving a lot of unhappy people.

Part of the melted and blackened play structure is wrapped in an orange mesh fence, “caution” tape wrapped around hand rails and the rubber ground surrounding it, melted and in some cases, gone.

City of Regina Director of Community Services Chris Holden says the cost to fix it will be $10,000 – $30,000.

“Whoever’s causing this vandalism I don’t really think that they think about the cost that it has or the impact it has on the community,” explained Holden. “So, that’s disappointing.”

They have reported the incident to police and are hoping someone will come forward with information.

The city is now waiting on an assessment by the manufacturer to figure out the final cost.

The company is going to be in Regina in September to install of another fully-accessible park in the Al Ritchie area. Holden is hoping they can coordinate something for Hansen Park at the same time.
