Sheepdogs’ Rolling Stone article offends some in Saskatoon

Trying to find the latest edition of Rolling Stone is a tough one with Saskatoon's The Sheepdogs on the cover.

The band won a contest to be the first unsigned band to grace the front of the magazine.

Inside, you will find senior editor Austin Scaggs taking a few shots at the city where “you can't escape the remoteness of Saskatoon and the lack of opportunities that comes with that.” Scaggs talks about the city’s “squat downtown skyline dominated by a Radisson Hotel.”

He describes a bar as a “sex farm for blithering drunks, full of toothless degenerates, binge drinking collegians and alcoholic members of the First Nations.”

Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison has a comeback.

“To, in fact, start talking about people’s personal appearance. Perhaps not being able to afford dental care, I think is unfortunate. And to be singling out any one group of people along the way I think is exceedingly unfortunate,” he said.

Atchison is quite proud of The Sheepdogs and all the attention they've brought to the city, similar to the Northern Pikes, Kenny Shields and Joni Mitchell.

“They bring a tremendous amount of recognition to our community. The Sheepdogs need to be congratulated for their doing. Keep up the great work and hopefully they’ll be on many more covers of the Rolling Stone and other big musical papers that are out there.”
