Farmers to discuss future of Canadian Wheat Board in Saskatoon

Farmers are gathering in Saskatoon on Tuesday night to discuss the future of the Canadian Wheat Board.

This fall, the federal government has plans to introduce legislation to eliminate the monopoly the board has on selling wheat and barley. Then, the board itself may be dissolved.

This worries Edward Sagan, a Melville-area farm and a member of the National Farmers Union.

He says right now when he sells his grain to the Canadian Wheat Board he keeps almost all of the profits.

“I get every cent of it. I get approximately 98 per cent of everything they sell and international market. When the multinationals, if they dissolve the wheat board, they keep the profit for themselves.”

Ballots about whether the Canadian Wheat Board should continue to exist have been mailed to farmers across the country.

Sagan has heard farmers are turning them in quickly and many don't want to see the wheat board disappear.

The public meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Saskatoon Inn.
