Successful Walk to Protest Against Nuclear Dumping

The Northern participants in the 7000 Generations Wanska Walk against Nuclear Waste Transportation and Storage in Saskatchewan have now left Prince Albert for other centres and, eventually, the Legislature in Regina on August 16th. They were very appreciative of the welcome and encouragement they received during their two days here.

The two local sponsor groups – Council of Canadians & RPIC (Renewable Power – the Intelligent Choice) wish to express thanks to everyone who supported this effort and in particular to Mayor Scarrow, City councilors and staff, City Police Services and summer students, all local media, Nordale Food ‘N’ Fuel, Bernice Sayese Centre, Indian and Metis Friendship Centre and the Union Centre, and Prince Albert Roman Catholic Diocese and parishes .

Special thanks to donors of food and the presenters & artists at the August 3rd reception and concert, in particular Katherine Masuskapoe , Liza Brown, Violet Naytowhow & their supporting musicians and to Meryl Wood and Larry Marshall for supplying and operating the sound systems.
The walkers from the North were joined by approximately 70 local residents for their entrance and again by 25 or so for their departure.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has been actively seeking a “willing host community” in the North to build a high level nuclear waste storage facility underground. Premier Brad Wall has stated that the province is not considering such a repository “at this time”. Debby Morin of the Committee for Future Generations said, ”well, at this time, we would like the provincial government to legislate a ban on nuclear waste transportation and storage”.
