Saskatchewan Penitentiary on lockdown

The Saskatchewan Penitentiary is on lockdown.

It comes after three people were assaulted Thursday at about 10 p.m. Within two hours the facility was on lockdown.

According to a press release, the victims were taken to an off-site hospital for treatment and have since returned to the penitentiary.

RCMP are assisting with the investigation. The general population will remain on lockdown during the investigation and will be reopened once the warden decides it is safe to do so.

Visits for medium-security inmates are cancelled until further notice – maximum-security inmates are unaffected.

The lock down is to ensure safety and security for the public, staff and inmates. The penitentiary accommodates 552 medium-security and 163 maximum-security inmates.
