Moosomin First Nation’s man was looking for son when he struck him with a car

A man from the Moosomin First Nation has been charged with impaired driving causing the death of his 17-year-old son.

The accident happened over the long weekend on the reserve about 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords.

Sgt. Howard Nodwell with RCMP said both the teen and his father had been together earlier in the day.

“He had left a function and the people in the vehicle were going to look for him,” explained Nodwell.

The driver of that vehicle was 45-year-old Melvin Swiftwolfe. During the search for his son, he hit the boy on a grid road.

Swiftwolfe is charged with impaired driving causing death, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and driving while suspended.

He has been released until next month so he can grieve and attend his son's funeral.
