Man dead after being struck by tree

Aug 1, 2011 | 8:53 PM

Waskesiu RCMP are reporting that a man had been killed after being struck by a falling tree.

They received the call at about 10 a.m. Monday

A family was at their trap line near Philion Lake, about 100 kilometres northwest of Waskesiu. They were in tents when a heavy storm with a tornado and hail came though, RCMP said.

The family managed to reach their truck for safety, except for a 19-year-old man. When the family went to look for him, they saw he was struck by the large tree.

The road out was no longer accessible by vehicle.

One family member made it to Highway 916 to flag down help after driving four km by ATV and walking one km.

Police and ambulance responded, but were unable to get to the site. They used a float plane from La Ronge and brought the fire department and EMS from La Ronge.

The man died before the plane arrived.

RCMP said the lack of cell and radio service made communication difficult.

An autopsy is pending.

The matter is under investigation and his name is not being released at this time.
