Summer weather on the way

Don’t give up on summer yet, even with today’s rain, there is hope for an end to the storms.

“Hopefully you’re not going to be short changed on summer, it’s just been a little delayed,” said David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada.

“The rest of July, the weekend and then as we get into August we see conditions being warmer than normal and precipitations, and it’s always tough to get precipitation right, but our models seem to suggest less than normal precipitation.”

There has been a lot of frequent, back-and-forth shifting between weather extremes, Phillips said.

“So this back and forth yo-yo kind of weather, which is something that can be very frustrating if you’re trying to plan your holidays or your farm activities, or whatever. You just can’t … depend upon it,” he said.

“It’s almost as if the weather out your front door is different than out your backdoor.”

There has been 12 days of rain, which is abnormal for July, Phillips said, and only about seven days where temperatures are above 27 C — usually by this point in July there have been about a dozen of the hot days.

While the past month of storms and rain may be frustrating, Phillips said it is not an abnormal amount of severe weather.

A couple more days this week could be wet, before the weather takes a more permanent turn for the better, Phillips said.

“Clearly we think that the last half of summer is going to be better than the first half. Anything could be better than the drenching rains and the lukewarm temperatures that you’ve had,” he said.

“The models are showing, and they’ve been showing this for a long time and gosh, I have got to hope this is eventually going to show up, is warmer than normal and drier than normal conditions.”
