Cote First Nation close to ousting chief and band council

Jul 26, 2011 | 6:18 PM

While the outcome of the vote isn’t official yet, people of the Cote First Nation, near Kamsack say they have enough to oust their current chief and council following allegations of embezzlement.

Rosalind Caldwell has been trying to prove that her band council has been stealing treaty land entitlement money since February.

Charges have been laid but at this point, they're still allegations.

Caldwell says they don't have a final count, but she's certain they've won.

“We had enough votes before we even got here today, we just picked up more people.”

She says nobody from council showed up for Tuesday's final vote, and a concerning note was left on the band office door.

“If we did pass something there, we were going to be charged with trespassing, and that’s our band hall,” said Caldwell.

Rod Desnomie with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development ministry says they've received the results of the vote, but there is still more to do Wednesday.

“They need to prove that there is consensus among the community and that’s open to their customs code,” said Desnomie.

If that happens the ministry could step in to help govern until an election takes place.
