800 votes in favour of ousting Cote First Nation council

Jul 27, 2011 | 5:29 PM

Nearly 800 people have voted to dissolve the Cote First Nation band council following allegations that they have been embezzling treaty land entitlement money.

Rosalind Caldwell is spearheading the campaign and says the numbers demonstrates just how many people want to see their current chief and council kicked out.

Caldwell met with Aboriginal Affairs Wednesday to present the results. Nothing is official yet, as Caldwell still has to return to the courthouse on Thursday to file the election results.

“At which time the judge will appoint a date – a hearing – for us. Once we get that, we turn that over to the (Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development ministry) and then they will recognize the new chief and council,” explained Caldwell.
