It may be a tough road ahead for federal NDP leader Jack Layton but he has the support of his Saskatchewan counterparts.

Dwain Lingenfelter says he called Layton today to wish him well after the federal leader announced that he's been diagnosed with cancer for the second time.

Lingenfelter admitted that while Layton may look frail he is confident in his chances.

“If anybody can beat the disease that he has been diagnosed with it will be Jack Layton,” said Lingenfelter.

Long-time NDP candidate Nettie Wiebe also expressed her condolences, calling the leader “second-to-none.”

“Jack had just done a huge and energetic and amazing campaign,” recalls Wiebe.

“We all thought, as did everyone else, that he was on the mend.”

Wiebe says caucus and party members, among millions of other Canadians, are sending their well wishes to the leader who brought the NDP to its most successful election in party history.
