Man sentenced in RCMP assault case

A man involved in a shooting incident with the RCMP back in 2008 was sentenced on today in a North Battleford court.

Serge Charette pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of dangerous driving.

Charette has been ordered to serve a 12-month suspended sentence, and has received a 10-year firearm ban as well.

In July 2008, Charette was seen driving erratically in Spiritwood when the RCMP attempted to stop him he rammed into the police car.

Officers were then led on a pursuit that ended north of Mayfair in Saskatoon, where Charette got out of his car carrying a large hunting knife.

He was shot by one of the members when he did not comply with the RCMP's demands.

Charette was taken to hospital before he was being taken into police custody.
