Local teens ready for rough waters

A program that teaches local youth leadership and teamwork is set to hit the water again.

Twenty teens, with very diverse backgrounds, left the city this morning, on a multi-day canoe trip.

The Prince Albert River Runners has been a very successful program. This is the second trip in the last two weeks. The first group returned last week and had a bit of a rougher ride thanks to Mother Nature.

“One morning we woke up after a good rain storm. We woke up to a mist of water and that just kept everything wet. Our group had good spirits. Our big concept is teamwork and we laughed and had a good time through it. We were successful because we are standing here now,” said Sgt. Dave Schluff, who helps to co-ordinate the program.

“We had a group photograph and we managed to get smiles on everyone's face.”

The program continues to be a great success and the program constantly receives inquiries on how youth can get involved, Schluff said.

“We've got such a waiting list this year. It is growing beyond what we can actually handle. We are just keeping it with two trips this year. We could have three trips this year,” said Schluff.

Before the teens depart, they are taken through an orientation day and taught water safety and team building skills.

“Our whole concept is to have this very diverse group of youth and work together as a team,” said Schluff.
