Jul 24, 2011 | 8:40 PM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders were able to win their first game of the season in one of the toughest places to get a victory.

The Roughriders held on to beat the Alouettes 27-24.

The Roughriders took control of the game on their first possession of the third quarter when they put together 13 plays for 73 yards that ended with a Wes Cates touchdown. The drive took over six minutes off the clock and gave the a 24-10 lead over the Alouettes. The lead was never in doubt until the final dramatic moments.

Saskatchewan's defensive tackle Dario Romero took Anthony Calvillo out of the game when he delivered a legal hit on the Montreal quarterback. Sean Lucas got an interception on the play. The Alouettes say Calvillo did not return due to an eye injury.

The game did get interesting late when the Alouettes scored with five minutes left in the game and with one minute left Hugh Charles fumbled the football and the Alouettes took the ball to the seven yard line. The Alouettes back up quarterback Adrian McPherson ran in his second touchdown of the game to make it a three point game with 25 seconds remaining.

The Roughriders Efrem Hill sealed the game when he caught the on-side kick.

Saskatchewan improves to 1-3 on the season and give rookie Head Coach Greg Marshall his first victory as a head coach. The Alouettes drop to 3-1 on the season.

Darian Durant was efficient through the air and on the ground. He threw for 177 yards and completed 70 percent of his passes but also ran 10 times for 71 yards to lead the team.

Next up for the Roughriders are the Calgary Stampeders on July 30th at Mosaic Stadium.
