Severity of crimes in Prince Albert climbing

Prince Albert is moving up the list.

The city ranked fourth in the country for overall crime severity for cities with at least 10,000 people, according to the Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index for 2010.

North Battleford holds the number one position.

In 2009, Prince Albert ranked fifth on the index that is compiled each year by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics and based on information provided by police departments.

When looking solely at violent crime, Prince Albert ranked third for the city size, again moving up from the fourth place finish in 2009.

Saskatchewan as a whole is number one on the index among the ten provinces. The province also reported the highest number of motor-vehicle thefts.

The index dropped one per cent in this province, but that’s not much compared to Canada’s six per cent decline.

Of the country’s major cities, Regina’s crime severity index is the highest, followed by Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
