Brad Wall to address BHP takeover bid during premiers’ meeting

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall will be bringing up last year's attempted Potash Corporation takeover, as he meets with other Canadian premiers in Vancouver this week.

Wall wants to see foreign investment on the agenda for the provincial leaders’ regular meeting.

He says Ottawa needs to change some of its rules, including those that prevented officials and MPs from commenting on the BHP Billiton takeover bid.

“Open up the rules around public dialogue, and what can be said during the takeover process, so Canadians can become engaged and their governments can become better engaged.”

Wall also says Canada have a history of setting conditions on such takeovers and failing to uphold them.

“The history in our country is that there are conditions put on new companies who are taking over Canadian entities, in terms of jobs and investment, but they are not enforced as strictly as they should be,” said Wall, adding that he hopes to see “meaningful” actions put in place.
