City looking for more development in crescent acres

Jul 18, 2011 | 6:29 AM

With available lots running out in the Crescent Acres neighbourhood, the city is hoping to develop an additional 170 acres for residential properties.

The first step of the project is to conduct a thorough study of the land to be used.

City director of economic development and planning Joan Corneil said the study will look at the quality and strength of soils, come up with several potential neighbourhood designs and study utilities and traffic capacity.

“Basically, we’ve got no design … and we need to get the design started in order to have land ready for development,” Corneil said.

On Monday, city council approved a $258,000 contract for an engineering firm to conduct the study of the next three phases of the neighbourhood.

Corneil said the study was the first step in a long process that might not result is actual development for as much as 15 years.

“This isn’t something new or pressing, we’re not saying we’re in a panic,” she said. “We’re looking to the future. We need to get the design done for that area so that we can be in a position at some point in the future to have land ready to go.”

Crescent Acres has been growing steadily since it was first conceived. Phases one and two of the neighbourhood stared with 87 lots, of which there are only four left.

There are about 60 lots in Phase three left. Phase four has not begun, but is planned out. This study will deal with Phases five to seven.
