Author Reading: Gilly’s Dangerous World by Jack Phalen

Monday, August 29, 6:30

Learn about life as a gopher in the book Gilly’s Dangerous World by Jack Phalen. The story depicts important themes such as the value of communal life. Children will also learn about “the cycle of life” through the connection of the natural relationship between gophers and others who share their habitat. Discover who the gopher’s predators are and what happens when they come up against their most feared predator. Will they be able to save their village?

The author and illustrator, Jack Phalen, grew up on a farm near Shaunavon. His characters are inspired by the many gophers he and his six siblings frequently saw scurrying about as children. As a boy, Jack always enjoyed drawing, painting and observing the prairie wildlife. He hasn’t changed much; Jack offers art classes to children as young as 2 and as old as 99.

Jack taught special education from kindergarten to grade 12 for thirty-five years. Now retired, he plans to publish a series of Gilly the Gopher stories. Jack lives in Prince Albert with his wife Cheryl. They have three children and six grandchildren. Jack still enjoys teaching in the classroom on a casual basis and the students enjoy hearing about Gilly the Gopher’s adventures.
