“Black money” scam targets Regina residents

Jul 15, 2011 | 7:31 AM

Fraudsters in Regina are trying to steal from people using a “black money” scam.

Police have recieved complaints from two people targetted by the scam in the past month.

The idea is simple. The con artist shows the target thousands of pieces of black paper then explains that they are dollar bills that have been dyed so police or customs agents can't identify them.

Then the suspect offers up the 'solution'.

“This chemical that will allegedly take away the blank ink and a real piece of money appears,” said Lara Guzik with the Regina police.

All the con needs from the target is some money to buy the washing agent.

Guzik says only one or two of the bills are real, and the rest are mostly dyed pieces of construction paper.

According to Guzik the scam has been used before.

“This is something that has been experienced in Regina, and definitely has been across Western Canada in the last little bit,” said Guzik.

She reminds people that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
