Sask. First Nations’ water lowest risk in Canada

Saskatchewan First Nation communities are coming out on top when it comes to a national assessment of water and wastewater systems.

The report shows Saskatchewan has the lowest risk level across Canada. Out of Saskatchewan's 103 water systems, 27 of them are considered high risk.

But Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan said that doesn't mean the water is unsafe.

Duncan said those requirements are being fulfilled on the Piapot and Whitecap First Nations.

“We may have operators that are very confident to run the system, but they don’t have certificiation or we may have design improvements that could be required.”

Only 35 per cent of operators were certified as of 2006–and that's gone up to 60 per cent.

He added the report shows the need to introduce legislation that will enforce certain standards when it comes to water safety.

The provinces with the highest risk levels include British Columbia and Ontario.
