Standoff in Saskatoon’s west side

Saskatoon Police blocked off parts of Avenue H and Avenue I on Wednesday morning following a police standoff that saw a 22-year-old man arrested on weapons charges.

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, police received reports that a man had entered a home on the 600 block of Avenue H carrying a gun.

Police focus shifted later in the morning to a home on the 400 block of Avenue I. There, officers arrested a 22-year-old man and found a gun.

An ambulance was also on scene after several people were allegedly hit by bear spray inside the Avenue I home.

Joanne McIntosh lives only doors down from the Avenue H home where the stand-off took place.

She said this isn't the first time this house has been a problem.

“This is the second time already in this summer that the cops and the guys with the gear have been there,” said McIntosh, referring to Saskatoon police’s emergency response team.

McIntosh said seeing police around her home is almost becoming normal.

“When you live on the same block, you get used to it. You shouldn't get used to it, but you get used to it,” McIntosh said.

Danielle Huston's sister and brother-in-law live on Avenue H. She came to the scene to check on how her family was doing.

“I will do anything if I have to put myself at risk to make sure my family is okay. I would do that,” said Huston.

The 22-year-old man faces weapons-related charges. He will appear in court on Thursday.

Two other people who were found inside the home face charges unrelated to the weapons incident.
