Officers plead not guilty in assault cases

Jul 13, 2011 | 2:32 PM

Two Prince Albert Police Service officers accused of assault charges have pleaded not guilty in provincial court today.

Michael Ozar and George Neufeld both entered their pleas through their lawyer on Wednesday.

Neufeld is charged with allegedly using force in an altercation with a male suspect on Dec. 31, 2010.

On Wednesday, the prosecution said they would proceed summarily, or less seriously, with the charges and set a trial date for Nov. 8.

Ozar is charged with allegedly using physical force in an altercation with a female suspect. The incident took place on Oct. 3, 2010.

In court, the prosecution said they would treat the incident as an indictable offence, or more seriously. Because of that, a preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 9, 2011. In a preliminary hearing, a judge decides if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial.

If a judge does decide a trial is warranted, Nuefeld has elected for a judge and jury trial to take place in Court of Queen’s bench.

Both officers had charges said against them after reviews by the Public Complaints Commission.

Both officers are currently on paid leave.
