SPCA will not euthanize dogs that survived on owner’s remains

At this point, the Saskatoon SPCA is not even considering putting down the seven Yorkton dogs who survived by eating their dead owner’s remains.

Tiffiny Koback with the Saskatoon SPCA says the goal is to groom the dogs back to health and avoid putting them down.

“We’ve had a lot of support in that we haven’t made the decision to euthanize them and we want to give them a fair chance,” said Koback.

She says most dogs would have done the same thing.

“Eventually they will resort to any means necessary to survive. In this case, when, what we would consider appropriate food wasn’t available, then (the dogs) are going to seek out whatever resources there are,” said Koback.

Koback says the dogs have shown no signs of bad behaviour since being in the SPCA’s care.

Callers into John Gormley Live this morning, for the most part agreed with the SPCA’s decision.

“They should be adopted,” said one man.

“I think they should go to a farm and live an outdoor based-life,” said another caller.

“It’s not their fault. They were there for a couple of weeks, they needed to survive; they were hungry,” a female caller said.
