Saskatchewan Beach cottage explodes

Jul 11, 2011 | 1:44 PM

It appears that no one was hurt in a cottage explosion that occurred at Saskatchewan Beach early Sunday morning.

Residents of the resort village confirm that there is very little left of a home near the town's boat launch after an explosion that appears to have originated in the home's garage or shed.

Brenda Chapman lives just a few blocks away from the house in question. She was jarred from her sleep by a sudden burst of noise around five in the morning.

“It literally shook the cottage,” she explained in an interview Monday morning. “It was a rumble.”

She heard sirens a few minutes later before falling back to sleep. When she awoke later in the morning to see what happened she was startled by what the state of the home.

“There was a blackened site where the garage had been and a house that only was, from the ground, only about five feet up. The rest of it was missing.”

Another resident who lives next to the burnt-out home tells News Talk Radio that the family that lived there year-round made it out safely and are now staying with friends.

The two neighbours are joint owners of a septic tank service business and they filled their truck with water and attempted to put out the fire themselves.

We're also told that fire crews from Silton attended the scene and tried to prevent the fire from spreading to the home. They were foiled when sand got into the fire hose and halted their progress.

Messages have been left with the RCMP to find out more but those calls have not yet been returned.
