Long Term Care Facility in Tisdale a group effort

Jul 11, 2011 | 11:46 AM

The Kelsey Trail Health Region is set to start preparing the site for a new long-term care facility in the Town of Tisdale.

Seven communities in the region have joined with the Tisdale to fund the new facility.

Those communities include the Rural Municipality of Tisdale, Rural Municipality of Barrier Valley, the Rural Municipality of Bjorkdale, the Rural Municipality of Connaught, the Rural Municipality of Star City, the Town of Star City and the Village of Valparaiso.

Shane Merriman, Kelsey Trail vice president of corporate services, said the facility will benefit more than just the immediate Tisdale area.

“When the project is announced for a community what is considered is the catchment area for the people that will be utilizing the facility within that catchment area” Merriman said.

“Our municipal partners have committed to the 20 per cent local share for the project.”

Merriman said because these groups have stepped up they can go ahead with tendering for the site preparation for the new facility. He said site preparation could start as early as August.

Merriman said however that it is still too soon to say when construction is expected to begin as they don’t yet have final numbers for the cost of the project.

The 20 per cent funded by Tisdale and surrounding communities is based on a preliminary estimate.

In the meantime he said he hopes people will continue to be generous as the health region is looking for more funding and furnishings for the new facility.

The new long-term care facility in Tisdale is one of two in the health region that were approved for replacement by the provincial government. The government is committed to funding 80 per cent of the project.
