Free camps aim to keep kids occupied

The Prince Albert Outreach Program is trying to keep kids busy during the summer months.

Their cultural camp started on July 1 and the sports camp on July 4, said Jan Cash, presentation co-ordinator with Prince Albert Outreach.

“Kids can come to the camps and sign up and we take them all over the place,” she said.

“We have a YAC camp as well, which is a drop in camp, but we take the kids to the lake and we take them golfing and we play basketball with them and we do cultural activities, depending which camp they sign up for, and everything is free.”

All the camps are based out of the Youth Activity Centre in the Margo Fournier Centre. The cultural camp runs until August 11, but takes a hiatus from July 21-25. The sports camp ends on Aug 18.

All the camps are free to join and kids can sign-up any time.

“All they have to do is come and fill out the form,” Cash said, adding they do have to get a permission slip signed so they can do things such as go to the lake.

“We like to keep kids off the streets and occupied. In the summertime they get board after the first week off of school.”

Prince Albert Outreach works with kids who are at risk and on the streets all year long, and Cash said this gives them the opportunity to come in, have a meal and take part in some activities, even if it is only for the day camp.

“We like the kids to be occupied and (doing) something constructive and fun and helpful for them,” she said.

The kids are enjoying the program, but she said they would like more kids to get involved.

The camps take place Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., although children are welcome to come earlier if parents need to drop them off.
