Computer scam shows up in Prince Albert

An elaborate computer scam is making its way across the province.

The caller on the other end of the phone identifies themselves as a representative with Microsoft. They will then tell you that there is a problem with your version of windows and ask you to go to a website and download a program.

That program allows the caller access to your computer and all your personal information.

A virus also gets uploaded into your computer that you must pay to remove by giving them your credit card number.

Kerry Recevur, at PA Software, said they have been getting upwards of 20 calls daily from concerned customers.

“We had one customer that reported that before even the call was ended, there was a $5,000 charge on their credit card and there was money missing out of their bank account,” he said.

Recevur said he himself has received a phone call.

“When I asked the gentleman for his Microsoft Certified Professional ID number, he stammered and put me on hold. Another gentleman came on and told me the same story.I asked him for his Microsoft Certified Professional ID number, and he said they don't have those,” said Recevur.

“When I informed him that I would be transferring the call to the RCMP, he hung up.”
Recevur said it is not the nature of Microsoft to call customers about a programming issue.

“If there is an issue with your version of windows they will automatically push an update direct from Microsoft to your computer. They will not make calls to your home or business directly. Microsoft does not have the man power to handle a global situation like this by making phone calls,” he said.

Prince Albert Police said they have also received complaints and are reminding people not to give out their credit card information.
