Mosquito numbers down in Saskatoon

Jul 4, 2011 | 3:44 PM

If you spent any amount of time outdoors over the long weekend, you might beg to differ. But the people who count them insist there are fewer mosquitoes this year than there were at this time last year.

Geoff Mcleod with the City of Saskatoon can't say for sure whether the trend will continue. He says it will depend on a number of things, including the weather.

“If we see the water standing, and not disappearing in the hot temperatures continuing, then the mosquitoes are going to develop a lot faster,” said Mcleod. “Our crews are out there all the time, keeping the mosquito larvae at bay.”

Mcleod thinks mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus will start to appear within the next couple of weeks.
