Eskimos upset Roughriders in season opener

Jul 3, 2011 | 8:13 PM

The Edmonton Eskimos beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 42-28 on the Riders' home turf in Regina on Sunday.

The Roughriders stuggled to generate anything on offence early in the game and the defense gave Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray too much time to throw the football.

Ray threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Jason Barnes in the 1st quarter, and the Eskimos had a 27-10 lead midway through the second quarter. The Roughriders were able to make a surge late in the first half to close the gap to seven points but the Eskimos widened the gap with eight unanswered points in the third quarter.

Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant threw three touchdowns and fumbled once on a night when the one of the elite quarterbacks in the CFL was outplayed by another.
