Watching the downtown

Jun 29, 2011 | 12:02 PM

Karmen Gautheir and Marissa Head are getting hands on work experience this summer.

They are the two students that have joined forces with two bylaw officers to form the new bylaw enforcement team that works downtown as part of a pilot program.

The two have completed the Aboriginal Policing Preparation Program and had an additional week of training before donning their blue polo shirts and heading downtown Prince Albert.

Each student is paired with a special constable and they patrol from First Avenue West to First Avenue East from 15th Street to River Street.

Since the program began June 6, they have addressed a number of bylaw issues, from bicycles on sidewalks to intoxicated people to panhandlers.

According to Cst. Paul Clouatre businesses have said they are already noticed a decrease in the issues that concern them.

“That’s promising,” he said.

For the most part people are glad to see the team and they are welcoming, said Head.

On only on occasion has Gautheir had to use the verbal judo training on someone she was speaking with.

Neither student has had to rely on their self-defense training.

The program patrols the streets from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
