Saskatchewan Roughriders release 25 players

Jun 26, 2011 | 10:44 AM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders made 25 cuts and moved other players to injured/inactive lists to get down to the league mandated 46 players.

One of the longest serving Roughriders Jocelyn Frenette was among those released.

General Manager Brendan Taman says the team wanted to find the happy medium of being able to hold on to their young prospects as well as keep some of the key veterans around as well. Frenette found his way on the chopping block because of the play of 2011 Draft Pick Alex Krausnick-Groh.

Leak odd man out

The team has also decided to keep only three quarterbacks on the roster, releasing free agent signing Chris Leak.

“Chris' major challenge was he had only two weeks to really figure out what we were doing. Cole (Bergquist) and Ryan (Dinwiddie) have been here for a year and half to two years and they had the major advantage there,” explained Taman after giving the news to the 25 players that they were released.

Of those 25 players, the team can sign seven of those players to the practice roster, with a minimum of two being non-imports.

Taman hinted that receiver Patrick Brown, defensive back Eddie Russ, linebacker Chris Graham, defensive tackle Ryan Lucas and offensive lineman Dan Clark would be asked to sign practice roster agreements in the next 24 hours.

Hawkins going under the knife

Taman also broke the news that defensive end Brent Hawkins shoulder injury is much more serious than originally let on, “There are some serious issues (in his shoulder) that he needs to get operated on, it's a tendon or a muscle or something, but it's not good.”

Hawkins joins kicker Luca Congi, receiver Rob Bagg, defensive back Leron Mitchell and receiver Aaron Fairooz on the nine-game injured list, although Taman believes the team might be able to bring Congi or Mitchell off the nine-game injured list early depending on team needs.

Taman also made it clear that the roster as is, will likely not be the same roster the team heads into their first regular season game with on July 3rd against the Edmonton Eskimos.

The team will be back at practice Sunday morning and those who've accepted practice roster agreements will be back on the field with their teammates.
