Prince Albert alive with pride

Jun 26, 2011 | 9:25 AM

More than 50 people took to the streets on Saturday to celebrate Pride Week in Prince Albert.

The week is officially known as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit and Allied Pride Week and was declared by the city as a time to celebrate diversity in the community.

The parade began on River Street West and wound around downtown Prince Albert to end at City Hall.

Prince Albert Pride Week Coordinator Jennifer Brockman said the day was a success in the way it could send out positive energy in an often hostile world.

“Today was really awesome,” she said. “When people are homophobic or transphobic or try to put us down, we just want to stand up, be proud and to just show love instead.”

She said she was glad to have been a part of the Pride Parades in the city since their beginning because of the need to spread the word about the gay community.

“It’s a smaller community and there’s a lot of people that want to be their true self and sometimes they find that it’s difficult because of reactions and it’s important to have a parade like this to spread awareness and show people they’re not alone,” she said.

It’s definitely a message that Lin Delorme, member of the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays can agree with. She learned her son was gay when he was in High School and at first it came as a shock.

“Coming out is a process for everybody, not only the child but also the parent,” she said. “I certainly did not start out marching in a Pride Parade. When my son came out, I didn’t know anybody that was gay– when I was growing up you could go to prison for being gay.”

“I needed education and support and I met lots of people and here I am,”

She said because of her experience, she had joined the organization in the hopes of passing on the knowledge and support she had received.

The parade marked the high point of Pride Week in the city. As a wrap-up there will be a barbecue at Kinsmen Park.
