South East Annexation moving forward

Jun 24, 2011 | 11:32 AM

The city is moving to the next step in its attempts annex land south of Marquis Road by organizing public hearings on the matter.

On Monday, the city councillors on the executive committee decided they wanted to set a public hearing on Aug. 8 to give residents a chance to give input on a bylaw that would add those lands to the city.

Councillors were at first hesitant to put forward the recommendation. Mayor Jim Scarrow suggested a later date might be more appropriate to accommodate those who would be away on vacation.

However councillors voted in favour of moving forward with the recommendation.

Council also did not go with the option to postpone the hearing to a later date in order to send out a survey to the local residents.

City manager Robert Cotterill said even with this step there’s still a lot of work that has to be done before any kind of development would happen.

“We have nothing planned for that land,” he said. “We still don’t own it and there’s a lot of processes and at least two and a half years needed before anything else can be done.”

Council still has to vote on the recommendation and will do so next week.
