New Canadian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Guidelines
Physical activity is integral to health, wellbeing and the prevention and management of chronic disease.
Over the past several decades, our level of physical activity has decreased dramatically. New guidelines
released by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) are the result of over four years of
study and reflect advances in exercise science.
The new guidelines provide basic, up-to-date information about the recommended types, intensity and frequency of physical activity to promote good health.
Guidelines are available for children (5-11yrs), youth (12-17yrs), adults (18-64yrs), and older adults
(65yrs+). Canadians are encouraged to exceed the minimum physical activity targets. Improved health
benefits are seen with increased variety, intensity and duration of physical activity.
