Northern community decides to stay

Jun 21, 2011 | 11:44 AM

Residents of Cumberland House are building berms and doing everything they can to deter the rising water near their community.

Highway 123, the only road into and out of the community, is already in rough shape and now it is recommended only 4X4’s and light trucks travel on it.

“All the supplies are being trucked in and we are going to do whatever it takes to bring supplies into the community,” said Mayor Andy McKay.

A community meeting was held Monday to discuss the situation

“The community has decided to stay this time. They don't want to be displaced from their community,” McKay said.

“There were concerns from a few people, but the majority of people are going to tough it out.”

McKay said there is no water inundating the community currently and he does not expect any to in the near future.

The community is calling on the province to come fix their road.

“They've been doing some maintenance on there but as soon as it rains, we are back to square one again like it was on June 2, when the road was impassable,” McKay said.
