Round one of match play is complete despite a long rain delay.  There were no upsets in the championships flyte.  Low qualifer and Open champion Andrew Zaba and defending champion Martin Ring are among the top players to advance to Thursday's round of 16.   Zaba beat Vern Rabinovitch while Ring defeated Shaun Dunphy.  Ring faces a tough test in round two against fellow P.A. golfer Ashley Ziegeman.

Here is a rundown of Thursday's championship flyte matches.

Andrew Zaba vs  Fred Smith

Aaron Little  vs  Torrie Coughlin

Todd Heaviesides vs Tyler Zaba

Trevor Bloom vs Mark Robinson

Martin Ring vs Ashley Ziegeman

Deer Lake's Andrew Zaba appears ready to pull off another double at the Men's Lobstick Golf Championships in Waskesiu.

He captured the Open title with a two-under-par 68 in the second round to pull away from the field.

Aaron Little carded a 69 on Tuesday to finish four shots behind Zaba, while Trevor Bloom who was tied with Zaba after an opening round 69, ended up third another shot back of Little.

Ashley Ziegeman carded a 71 in round two to move up to a fourth place tie with Tyler Frank who closed the Open with a 72, while first round leader Dylan Hoemson followed up his first round 67 with a 77 to finish alone in sixth.

A consistent round punctuated by a quick start was the key to victory, said Zaba.

“Pretty much right off the start I made a quick little save from the trees, made a par and kept on the fairways and greens all day. I kind of stayed the same, I was just out there playing my game, hitting my driver very well and then putting it on the green, making a couple of puts here and there, a lot of pars.”

Zaba captured both the Open and Match Play championships in 2009.  There are too many good golfers to talk about the Open victory as a good omen, said Zaba.

“We'll just go one match at a time right now, don't think too far ahead, just go out and have some fun.”

Zaba then beat Bloom and Scott Pinder in a playoff to take the low qualifying spot for match play. All three carded 69's in Monday's qualifying round.

There was also a ten way tie breaking process to determine the final five spots in the championship flyte. The cut off was 76. Some high profile players and perrenial contenders didn't make it including last year's runner up Jock Kriegler, former champion Warren Knam and Brad Phelps who was last year's low qualifyer and Open champion.

Opening round Championship flyte matches slated for 1:30 Wednesday afternoon have Andrew Zaba against Vern Rabinovitch, Aaron Little vs Ron Stewart, Todd Heaviesides against Richard Leclaire, Jim Gawluk taking on Dean Phillips, Trevor Bloom vs Ryan Jarvis, defending champion Martin Ring against Shaun Dunphy, Scott Pinder taking on Ted Bach, Dennis Delwo matched against Jeff McKeand, Randy Emmons vs Fred Smith, Torrie Coughlin against Jamie Harris, Tyler Zaba paired with Justin Blackwell, Cadmus Delorme vs Cliff Selander, Terry Koshylanuk meeting Mark Robinson, Asheley Ziegeman vs Mike Herperger, John Wilby paired with Richard Heidt, and Dallas Mengel taking on Rene Hanchar.
