Prince Albert cop relives his Stanley Cup moment

Jun 15, 2011 | 12:14 PM

It was 17 years ago that a Prince Albert resident came within a goal of winning the Stanley Cup, tonight the police officer hopes his former team can finally claim hockey's biggest prize.

Brian Glynn was a Vancouver Canuck during their improbable run to the final in 1994 and he’ll watch his old team face the Boston Bruins in a one game show down for Lord Stanley’s mug.

The former NHL defensemen said he will never forget the 1994 run.

“I remember stepping out onto the ice during those playoffs in Vancouver, in the old Pacific Coliseum and the sound would just be deafening in there,” said Glynn, from his home in Prince Albert.

“Anytime you’re an athlete and your fan base is into that, it just gives you an incredible boost.”

The Canucks lost that year, 3-2 to the New York Rangers in a heartbreaking game seven loss at Madison Square Gardens. There is one moment in that game that has stuck with Glynn, he said.

“We had a player by the name of Nathan LaFayette and I think with about five minutes to go in game seven (he) went down and rung a puck off the cross bar and the score was 3-2 at that time for the Rangers,” he said.

“I think I’ve relived that moment over-and-over in my mind, probably a million times, since that game. To be so close to pushing that game into overtime and having an opportunity to win the Stanley Cup, it’s certainly something I think about from time-to-time, especially when I’m watching playoff hockey.”

Despite having his Stanley Cup dream end in disappointment, the 17-year pro has fond memories of the team that nearly won it all.

“Going through and you spend two months and every day is what it is, you get pretty close bonds with all those players and it’s certainly a time I will never forget.”

With the Canucks back in a game seven with a chance to win the cup, Glynn said he is hoping for a Vancouver victory this time around.

CBC will carry game seven of the Stanley Cup Final beginning at 6 p.m.
