Funnel cloud spotted near Birch Hills

Jun 14, 2011 | 1:48 PM

The sky south of Prince Albert got very dark this afternoon, spawning what appeared to be a funnel cloud near Birch Hills.

“It was up in the air quite a ways but it looks like it was starting to come down and it kind of eased back up again then came back down a little bit more,” said Darren Sunddo, who witnessed the cloud form before 1 p.m..

“It was still quite a ways off the ground though and then it kind of stayed at that point for two or three minutes and then it just dissipated.”

It was dark grey with well-defined edges, he said.

Environment Canada said based on the reports they've received it's likely it was a funnel cloud, but haven't been able to confirm if it touched down.

The weather agency issued a severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday afternoon for the area near Birch Hills, as well as many other parts of central Saskatchewan. The conditions are favourable for severe storms to develop said, Gregg Walters with Environment Canada. The main threat is rain and hail, but there is always the potential for a brief funnel cloud appearing, he said.
