SIAST goes green to get around

SIAST Woodland Campus students and staff have a new way to get around.

The campus’ Green Group purchased four mountain bikes along with helmets and locks for students and staff to sign out and use for running errands and going to appointments.

“This is available to them for any short commute that they may need to make,” said Cindy Koob, committee member of the SIAST Woodland Campus Green Group.

“We believe that it will not only save time and money, it reduces our eco footprint and encourages a health campus community.”

All students and staff have to do to use the new bikes are sign them out through SIAST Student Association using their SIAST staff or student ID card.

“If they have some short errands that they need to run, they can simply rent out the bike, take it and go do whatever business they have to do,” she said, explaining it can be anything from a medical appointment to duty errands.

The Green Group, a combination of staff and students, receives $1,000 a year from the SIAST Green Initiative Fund to promote sustainability.

Other initiative the local group has done in the past are their lug-a-mug campaign, Earth Week videos, environmental impact displays, idle-free zones and plastic recycling.
